Same yarn, different day

I have quite a bit of Lion Wool left over from my gloves so I’m going to make a matching hat using the Marsan Watchcap pattern.

I found this pattern a year ago when I wanted to make a chemo cap for my grandpa who was going through chemotherapy treatment for leukemia. I used a super soft merino/angora blend for his hat and it was practically luxurious to the touch. I have a great picture of grandpa wearing the hat that mom sent to me via cellphone nearly a year ago but I can’t for the life of me get my phone to behave and save or send the photo (if anyone has any experience getting old photos off of a Sprint phone let me know!)

What’s interesting about this hat is the entire thing is done in a twisted rib. Knit one into the back of the stitch, purl one. It makes a really neat but simple pattern. I made a short video demonstrating the stitch.

Here’s a comparison of a regular k1p1 rib and a k1p1 twisted rib. Subtle, but the difference is there. Neat, huh?

I can make gloves!

I’ve been knitting for about four years. I like pulling out some needles and yarn while watching TV, keeping my hands busy. I’ve made one pair of gloves before but these are a little different.

New gloves!

I used the pattern News Item Gloves from Knit Wiki. Every other glove/mitten pattern I’ve tried was on double-pointed needles but these were done on straight needles, which was a little awkward at times to knit.

News Item Gloves 1 After the initial cuff the glove was worked in stockinette up the thumb gusset, hand and then fingers. After shaping the tip of the finger you have to stitch down the sides which makes a less smooth glove than you would have with DPNs but knitting on straight needles goes so quickly.

I used Lion Wool in Autumn Sunset I found in the Wal Mart clearance bin for $3.00 a skein. When you find $3.00 wool you buy it. Even if you have no idea what you’ll use it for. Lion Wool worked out well for this project. The finished gloves are really warm (I tested them this morning on my walk to work). They might not stand up to truly frigid Fargo mornings, but they’re perfect for the weather we have right now.

So warm!
