Let’s go to the fair!

My entries are ready for the Red River Valley Fair! I haven’t done fair entries for ten years. I wonder if I still have the ribbon-winning skill I once had?

I picked four simple entries. I figured it’s best to do something simple well than something overly extravagant.

1. April Red Robin amigurumi.

2. Pretty In Purple beret.

3. May Flowers socks.

4. Thumbs Up Thumbprint Cookies – these are completely free of the eight most common food allergens plus gluten. If I had been able to confirm if my jam was sulfate-free I could say they were free of that, too, but I couldn’t get confirmation. Jam usually has sulfates in it.

Off to the fair we go!

So if you’re at the Red River Valley Fair and taking a gander at the needle crafts or cookies you might see my entries. Good luck to everyone else who is entering their handiwork to the fair! Let’s bring home some ribbons!

Our wedding cake

Over the weekend my husband and I celebrated our new marriage with our friends and family by having a marriage blessing ceremony at his church and a wedding reception. The church service was lovely, the dinner and dance were loads of fun and included karaoke (if you know me you know this is not a surprise). One thing I will remember for the rest of my life is singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of my lungs surrounded by a crew of my best and oldest friends. Afterwards I even went to one of the dive-iest dive bars in Fargo in my wedding dress. I had a great time.

There are things in every wedding celebration that hold special meaning for the couple, or each individual. For me it was the cake.

Our wedding cake

Isn’t it lovely? The cake was made by my friend Kim as a gift to us. I’m so glad she made it. We learned from my sister’s wedding that trusting a stranger with your wedding cake can lead to disaster. Kim’s cake is perfect!

The lower tier is made of white cake. We taste-tested three different types of frosting before we found the just the right taste. Unfortunately we couldn’t guarantee that particular one was gluten-free, so it would only be on the bottom tier. The top tier is gluten-free yellow cake for me with a gluten-free frosting. The icing and fondant vines and leaves were designed to match our wedding announcements.

The cake toppers represent us, as well as my love of crafting, Pablo’s love of my crafts, and our mutual love of amigurumi. They are absolutely adorable and I got tons of compliments on them which makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I know I’ll keep them for years and years!
